1984

1984 was a very interesting book, but at first rather hard to get into. I found it rather scarry with the way that Big Brother was fully able to control people and cause them to fear revealing their own thoughts. I was able to relate one of the value statements very easily. "For an idea to exist, we must have words to express." I feel that this relates to 1984 well because in the book all the people fear expressing their thoughts, which in the book is illegal unless they are the thoughts of big brother. People need to be able to express their thoughts and ideas inorder for the world to advance. When we fear expressing our own thoughts and ideas well become less of a person because we no longer express ourselves but now rely on others for what we should do and how we now have to act.

  1. Almost none of the main characters in 1984 were successful at supressing their true thoughts. Parsons was even caught shouting "down with big brother" in his sleep. It just proves further how important it is to let your soul be heard.

  2. I agree with what you said about the value statement because they are not allowed to voice their opinions and if they do, as Winston did in his diary, they are taken to the ministry of love and vaporized so that they no longer exist, as O'Brien tells Winston. I think if everyone was to voice their opinions, as well as the proles, the party would have nothing to do because they would have no followers but everyone is too intimidated by the Party.

  3. I agree with about how that value statement connects with 1984, in the book the people are afraid to express their thoughts and ideas. Without everyone's ideas and thoughts the world wont advance the way it has in recent history.

  4. I really like your view point that people need to be able to express themselves and think their own thoughts for society/the world to move forward. If only one person has a say then nothing really gets accomplished.
