Down with big brother

When Winston realized what he had written he was worried that the Thought Police would come for him. He had committed a thoughtcrime, which in the book is one of the worst things anyone can do. I want to know why it is so horrible for people to have their own opinons on their lives? I guess living in a modern society like we do today where we are able to express our own thoughts without fear of being arrested I don't see the problem in telling our thoughts. Why is Big Brother such a big aspect of the peoples lives that cause them to live life in fear of their own thoughts?

  1. I feel that Big Brother is a big aspect in poeple's lives because the party has so much power and people fear them. So, fear is a great motivator and thats why i believe the people are scared to commit a thoughtcrime.

  2. It is crazy to think that the only place these people have privacy is in their thoughts and even this is being invaded by the government. I find it very scary that the parents in the novel have to watch themselves around their own children. I love my family and I would never go anything to get them into trouble, muchless killed by the government, but the children in this novel take pride in selling out their parents for thoughtcrime.

  3. I have always wanted to know what others are thinking. At times it would be very helpful, but it is not possible for a reason. Thoughts are the only place where one is truly free. If society progresses to where they can infringe on a privacy so sacred, then 1984 will come true.

  4. Big Bother is such a big aspect on their lives because poeple fear them. They have fear of going to jail or possbily dying. It would be scary to think that the government can take away the one thing where we are guaranteed privacy, which is our thoughts.
